The Myth of Racial Democracy
During the th century, “racial democracy” fostered the idea of racial harmony in the country, but in reality it never existed
From the Slave Ship to Abolition
From the first slave ship to the signing of the Golden Law, Brazil endured years of slavery—a history marked by twists and turns and often misrepresented
Quotas Are Not Charity
In , the Empire imposed yet another form of exclusion on Afro-Brazilian children and adolescents, who were barred from attending school This situation would only be partially rectified years later with the passage of the quota policy law
Race, Work, and Rights
In the st century, most spots in top private schools and colleges are filled by white students, and leadership positions are also reserved for white people
Urbanization as Apartheid
In , soldiers who had fought in the War of Canudos settled on a hill in downtown Rio de Janeiro while they waited for homes promised by the Brazilian government, which never materialized
Black Women
On the one hand, Black women have been the driving force behind the creation of Brazil’s wealth On the other hand, women like Zacimba Gaba and Marielle Franco have shaped history through their strong political and cultural activism
Structural Racism
Most people are unaware of—or have never realized—the racism embedded in Brazilian institutions and family life that perpetuates white privilege
Whiteness vs. Anti-Racism
Whiteness is a specific racial identity that originated in Europe and is mistakenly viewed as universal What is the legacy of slavery and racism in the context of whiteness?
