In 1854, the Empire imposed yet another form of exclusion on Afro-Brazilian children and adolescents, who were barred from attending school. This situation would only be partially rectified 180 years later with the passage of the quota policy law.
Quotas still provoke anger among some, even though they represent the only educational opportunity for many. We will examine the political struggles faced by the Black community on the path to securing racial quotas.
