Throughout her life, Mãe Beata has always championed social justice; she has led campaigns and initiatives to combat religious intolerance, prevent STDs/HIV/AIDS and breast cancer, and address violence against women, as well as racial and gender discrimination, in addition to being a well-known advocate for the environment. Since the 1980s, she has been considered one of the leading figures in the Candomblé community of Rio de Janeiro.
