The President of Brazil acknowledged the importance of racial quotas in higher education during the University of São Paulo’s anniversary ceremony.
Lula attended the University of São Paulo for the ceremony marking the institution’s 90th anniversary. The University of São Paulo (USP) has educated many people; however, like many other universities, for decades it seemed out of reach for poor, Black, and Indigenous people to gain admission. But that reality has changed, and as the President of the Republic pointed out, today these groups make up 50% of the institution’s student body.
