April 23 marks the feast day of Saint George, the patron saint of soldiers, who is venerated by a legion of devotees. Cultne was there and recorded the Mass at the Church of Saint George in Campo de Santana, in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
Saint George (275 – April 23, 303) was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier in the army of Emperor Diocletian, venerated as a Christian martyr. In hagiography, Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in Catholicism (in the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion). He is immortalized in the legend in which he slays the dragon. He is also one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
