The professor is the first Black woman to hold a tenured position in the institution’s 185-year history. In 2016, Maria Izabel de Oliveira had served in the position on an interim basis.
The ceremony was held at the Palácio da Fazenda in downtown Rio de Janeiro and was hosted by Black actor Hilton Cobra. The panel included several leaders who embody the new Director-General’s commitment to the diversity of communities that make up Brazil. The appointment is of utmost importance for bringing to light the memories and history of marginalized communities that have been overlooked in traditional historical narratives.
