Bartolomeu, now known as Mestre Memeu, had been washing cars at Terreiro de Jesus in Pelourinho, Salvador, for 35 years when he was invited by Neguinho do Samba to join the project. Today, he is the principal conductor of Olodum’s performance band, which consists of 19 musicians.
