About

Carlos Augusto de Negreiros Ferreira is a Brazilian percussionist, composer, and singer. His music is influenced by Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures.

A scholar of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, he taught percussion classes at the UERJ Cultural Center, where he created and directed the Drum Orchestra and the Percussion and Music Training Program for Harmony Directors at Rio de Janeiro’s leading samba schools, affiliated with Sodheserj. He recently participated as a professor of popular percussion at the 22nd edition of the International Meeting of the Brasília School of Music. As a percussionist, he was a member of the Afro-Brazilian Orchestra led by conductor Abgail Moura, the first orchestra to systematically feature percussion as a solo element in musical pieces.

He has participated in various jazz festivals in Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Leipzig, Weimar, Halle, and Frankfurt. He has recorded with various MPB artists. With Milton Nascimento, he participated in the show Missa dos Quilombos in Spain. He served as cultural director of Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi and was one of the founders of the theater group Ação de Teatro, the Afro-Modern Dance group Olorum Baba Min, and the Quilombos samba school.

Together with conductors Karl Berger and Paulo Moura, he led percussion workshops at the MAM in Rio de Janeiro. He has given lectures at the universities of Atlanta and Washington on Brazilian rhythms, as well as Brazilian percussion workshops at cultural centers in Berlin and at Samba Sidon, the largest samba event held in Germany.

He founded the Quarteto Repercussão (also featuring Luizão Bastos—percussion and vocals; Edson Barbosa—guitar, vocals, and arrangements; Andrea Spada—double bass and vocals), where he performs as a singer/percussionist, deeply rooted in Afro-Brazilian percussive aesthetics—his first CD, *Som Mestiço*, was released in March 2006 by the Fina Flor label.

He was an arranger, composer, and percussionist for the groups Laskamão (also featuring Analimar, Pedro Lima, Guto Goffi, Mario Brother, Robertinho Silva, Orlando Costa, and Marcos Esguleba) and Baticun (also featuring Marcos Suzano, Jovi Joviniano, Beto Cazes, and the late Caboclinho). With Baticun, he recorded the CD *Almost Live* with the Fun Horns wind quartet in 1994.
