Maalum is a Black Brazilian girl who is born and raised in a home filled with love and Afrocentric influences. As soon as Maalum steps outside her home, she faces the challenges imposed by the rhetoric and practices of a racist society. As soon as she arrives at school, everyone laughs at her name. She doesn’t understand why, and with her family’s help, Maalum will discover its meaning, and her sadness will turn to pride through her ancestry.
